The most outstanding Spanish gem, Sphalerite are rare, fiery citrus-hued gemstones from a famous deposit in Picos de Europa in Northern Spains Iberian Peninsula, arguably the worlds premier source. Sphalerite is from the Greek sphaleros (treacherous), due to historic confusion with other ores. While its minerals found in many countries, gem-qualitys exceedingly scarce, with only two significant sources, Mexico and Spain. As a scarce exotic, Sphalerite is typically restricted to specialist collections and museums, even though it has some amazing diamond-like optical properties: high-brilliance, fire three times that of diamond, and an adamantine (diamond-like) lustre. These characteristics afford Sphalerite a striking, visual similarity to fancy diamonds with autumnal hues. While there are several mines in Picos de Europa, the esteemed Las Manforas Mine is world-famous for its small transparent crystals mined directly from host rock. Brittle, difficult to polish, with six directions of perfect cleavage, Sphalerite is extremely challenging to cut. Displaying prized Ruby oranges with a highly-desirable medium saturation and tone, it was optimally faceted in the legendary gemstone country of Sri Lanka (Ceylon), home to some of the worlds best lapidaries. Skilfully cut to maximise colourful brilliance, with an exceptional clarity for Sphalerite, and an attractive overall appearance, fine Sphalerite over one carat demands a premium. The ring sits approx. 8mm above the finger and measures approx. 12mm down the finger.
